Chocolate Nostril Prize Nominee: Wajid Khan

This Tory, former Liberal, MP for Mississauga-Streetsville would seem to present himself as proof positive that there is no one so zealous as the recently assimilated converted. Consider his private member’s statement yesterday:

Mr. Speaker, the hypocrisy of the Liberals when it comes to immigration is unbelievable. The fact is it is the Liberals who allowed the backlog to balloon from 50,000 to 800,000 applications. For 13 long years they did nothing.

The Liberals also opposed measures this government took to clean up their mess. They voted against $1.3 billion in new settlement funding for newcomers to Canada. They voted against the foreign credentials referral office. They voted against our cutting the $975 head tax on immigrants.

The deputy leader of the Liberal Party admitted the Liberals did not get it done on immigration and I have to agree with him.

The Conservative government wants families to be reunited faster. We want skilled workers to come here sooner.

The question is, what do the Liberals have against immigrants? With their track record we certainly will not take lessons on immigration from the Liberal Party.

The irony of this statement is that Khan was a Liberal for two of those 13 years of inaction, so in a sense he’s blasting himself for the immigration problem.

Say what you will about Garth Turner, at least he sat for a while as an independent before crossing the floor and biting the hand that originally got him into the House. Khan’s own crossing wasn’t all that long ago, which is why this smackdown, to me, seems a bit unseemly. And why Mr. Khan merits the nomination for an example of undue brown-nosing.

  1. Waynes McBrown Says:

Did you stop and think that maybe Khan crossed the floor because the Liberals weren’t doing anyting on the immigration file, or on any other important issue facing Canada, for the 2 years he was a Liberal??

    Even Iggy stated as much.
