The Abstainers

Yesterday was the first confidence vote on the budget. As you’d expect, the Liberals left enough people out to allow the budget to pass.

Would you like to know the names of the abstainers? Here they are:

BAGNELL, Larry (Hon)
BENNETT, Carolyn (Hon)
BEVILACQUA, Maurizio (Hon)
BYRNE, Gerry (Hon)
CANNIS, John
CODERRE, Denis (Hon)
COTLER, Irwin (Hon)
D’AMOURS, Jean-Claude
DHALLA, Ruby
DUNCAN, Kirsty
FOOTE, Judy
FRY, Hedy (Hon)
GARNEAU, Marc
KANIA, Andrew
KARYGIANNIS, Jim (Hon)
LEBLANC, Dominic (Hon)
MACAULAY, Lawrence (Hon)
MARTIN, Keith (Hon)
MCTEAGUE, Dan (Hon)
MURPHY, Brian
MURPHY, Shawn (Hon)
MURRAY, Joyce
PACETTI, Massimo
PATRY, Bernard
REGAN, Geoff (Hon)
RUSSELL, Todd
SGRO, Judy (Hon)
SILVA, Mario
TRUDEAU, Justin

Impressive list, a mix of back and front benches, but now with one thing in common: they’ve disqualified themselves from talking about this budget.

Remember their names, folks. And, come the next election, whenever it may be, remember how they decided not to vote.

UPDATE (08h29): The Alberta Aardvark apparently had the same idea that I did, and his list has the advantage of linking to contact info for The Abstainers.

  1. grandma says:

I was always taught this rule:

“If you don’t vote you can’t complain about the government.”

Does this abstaining mean we don’t have to listen to complaints about the budget from these honourable members?

  2. MaryT says:

Does this mean we will no longer be privileged to hear Bennett and Fry throwing tantrums in the H of C?

Speaking of tantrums, anyone catch that Kennedy meltdown in the US senate yesterday?

  4. Thucydides says:

I suggest we use ridicule to drive these 29 out of politics. Start calling radio talk shows, writing newspapers (especially the ones in their riding’s) start or comment on blogs and talk to everyone you know,

    The message is simple:

“[insert name of MP] said the budget was bad, but they didn’t show up to vote against it . Why should we take anything else they say seriously?”

This should also be trotted out any time these 29 speak on any subject whatsoever and especially at any public event where they are speaking and you can ask questions. (video and YouTube any response please).

An especially concentrated effort should be made against Trudeau to derail any leadership aspirations and unhinge those in the liberal party who are pinning their hopes on the “young dauphin”
