Blogging Tories Challenge: Who Should Be The Next Governor-General?

Don Martin has a new column up where he predicts that when Michaelle Jean finishes her term next September — well, that’ll be that.

Odds are, Stephen Harper will still be around to pick the next one. So by way of being helpful, I thought it’d be time to draw up a short list of folks.

Here are my nominees:

  • Angelo Persichilli — he’d fulfill the “journalist” part of the criteria, he’s a logical and staunch Harper advocate, and he can also represent the ethnic minorities. Lack of French? He can work around that.
  • Peter Milliken — Harper knows his history well enough to remember the example of Jeanne Sauve, first woman Commons Speaker whose qualifications for the GG position were beyond question. (Of course, there’s the question of who’d become the next Speaker, not to mention the need for a by-election, but that’s another day.)
  • Ken Dryden — Appeals to the hockey fans in all of us, he’s got the political experience, and just because he’s currently mixed in with bad companions doesn’t mean he’s beyond redemption.
  • Don Cherry — Sure he’s populist, but would the CBC let go of him?
  • Kim Campbell — No, we’ve never had a former PM as GG before, and it would be a sign of harmony between the Reform and PC factions of the party.
  • ChuckerCanuck — Well, he might want it, since the perqs are better than for a senator.
  • Mike Harris — If you want some mischief among the Opposition ranks, this’ll do it.

And here’s the poll:

Remember, you’ve got a week to vote. Choose wisely.

What about Phil Fontaine? He would really be an inspiration for our First Nations people..and just think of the great PR it would be.

I’m in the minority here, but I like Angelo Persichilli for the GG post. The others, I feel, are square pegs for round holes. Don Cherry is such a strong, outspoken Canadian patriot, but he should stay doing what he’s doing and getting his digs in on Hockey Night. The other contestants have had their day, but Angelo is a wise and rising star, revealing a high standard of moral thought in his courageous common-sense expression, indicative of an elevated passion for Canada and an understanding of our unique place in the world.

I think Harper will pick either a current Liberal or NDP MP who comes from a bell-weather riding that the Conservatives want to pick up.

  6. McGuire Says:

I thought of Campbell as well. However my 1st choice would be for Rick Hillier. A respect for our military should be a requisite for the job.
