Blogging Tories Challenge: Who Should Light the Winter Olympic Flame?

The National Post has some interesting speculation going on as to who should be the final runner (and therefore the lighter of the Olympic flame) during the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Just one thing about the Post’s lists of candidates: I wouldn’t regard them as inspiring as Muhammad Ali. (Pamela Anderson? David Suzuki?! They inspire a different sort of reaction, if you ask me.)

Nope, if there’s one thing I know about the Olympic final torchbearer, it should be that no politics ought to be involved. That crosses off any federal or provincial politician, as well as any activist.

So — I’ve put together my own list of candidates. And I’ve added an “other” category, though I must warn people that the above apply: no politicians, no “activists.” You can, however, name any Canadian “celebrity” you like.

Why is it that every time there’s momentous occasion, the only people mentioned are celebrities, never ordinary Canadians?

There are Canadians out there who daily strive to make this Country a better place, and there is one in every neighbourhood, one in every small town. You know them, you rub elbows with them every day.

We should all write in the name of a regular Canadian who isn’t a member of an elite group, but who is part of the real backbone of this great Country. Put reasons why the person deserves the honor, put the names in a barrel, and choose one.

We have to stop being dazzled by celebrity, and start celebrating ordinary Cnadaians, the one who really make this Nation work!

    Olympian

Probably Canada’s most famous Olympian, Nancy Greene of Rossland—named Canada’s Female Athlete of the 20th Century—thrilled us in 1968 with a decisive win in the Giant Slalom. She wasn’t unknown: Her total of 13 World Cup victories is still a Canadian record.

How about someone from our armed forces? I’m sure there are plenty of men and women who Canada would be proud to light the cauldron.
