As Parliament prepares to resume next month, there’s one bit of housekeeping that needed to be taken care of: Tom Mulcair got his PC appointment yesterday.
It is a fairly important thing. As I’ve mentioned before, an Opposition leader appointed to the Council is a fairly recent phenomenon, and Mr. Mulcair was going to get it sooner rather than later. Essentially it’s an acknowledgement of respect, from the PMO, for the Leader of the Opposition (and, from certain perspectives, the heir presumptive).
Interestingly, if you look at the most recent listing, you’ll see that Peter Milliken, the former Speaker, was made a PC only last May. As a former Speaker of the House, you can’t really argue that he doesn’t deserve the honor, and apparently it’s automatic for former Speakers.
